Jeremy Clarkson’s own daughter has joined in the backlash against him after he said the Duchess of Sussex ought to be paraded through the streets naked and have excrement thrown at her.
Expressing what he said was a “hatred” for the Duchess, the former Top Gear presenter made the comments in his regular Sun newspaper column.
He wrote: “At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, “Shame!” and throw lumps of excrement at her. Everyone who’s my age thinks the same way.”
But the comments drew widespread criticism including from his 28-year-old daughter, Emily, who said she stood against everything that he had written about the Duchess.
Posting on social media the author and blogger wrote: “My views are and have always been clear when it comes to misogyny and bullying and the treatment of women by the media.
“I want to make it very clear that I stand against everything that my dad wrote about Meghan Markle and I remain standing in support of those that are targeted with online hatred.”
Mr Clarkson’s comments also drew a backlash from other public figures including Nimco Ali, the former government adviser on tackling violence against women and girls, who said: “A young black woman opens up about her struggle with suicidal thoughts as a result of the abuse she got from the media and this is how some men in the media react. This is absolutely horrific.”
Presenter Carol Vorderman, also hit out, writing on Twitter:: “NO Jeremy Clarkson. Not on any level, in any circumstance, is it OK to write this stuff about any woman and absolutely NO to ‘everyone who’s my age thinks the same’.”
Mr Clarkson’s remarks came just days after he attended a media lunch in London with the Queen Consort, a point seized upon by Omid Scobie, a journalist who is close to the Sussexes.
Writing on Twitter he said: “That would be the same Jeremy Clarkson who was at a private Christmas party with Camilla, the Queen Consort earlier this week (alongside guests including a Daily Mail editor and Piers Morgan).”
Mr Clarkson predicted that the marriage between the Duke and Duchess would not last and said he would end up being stuck in California alone with no friends or family to support him.
