Boxing Day sales in London descended into violence after two female shoppers began brawling on Oxford Street.

A video on social media, which has since been deleted, showed one woman grabbing what appeared to be a metal clothes rail, and then attempting to hit another customer.

The woman on the receiving end then grabbed a pair of jeans off the rack as she tried to hit her opponent back.

A member of staff at Pull & Bear, where the violence broke out, was left with a head injury after trying to break up the fight.

Security guard praised for intervention

Other customers were heard shouting amid the chaos before rushing towards the store’s exit to avoid getting caught up in the melee.

The two women were eventually broken up by a security guard.

Social media users who viewed the footage sent praise to the security guard for his role in calming the situation.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “Officers found a member of staff with a head injury. He declined medical assistance and continued his work. There have been no arrests. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Millions of shoppers defied expectations on Boxing Day, with early indications suggesting that footfall at UK’s top retail destinations was up by as much as half on this time last year.
